Nelson and Plosser Revisited: A Re-Examination using OECD Panel Data∗

چکیده

This paper applies various recent panel unit root tests to 14 macroeconomic variables. These variables, observed for the OECD countries since the 50’s, are the same as those considered in the seminal paper by Nelson and Plosser (1982) for the United States. Two distinct generations of tests are used. The first one is based on a cross-sectional independence assumption. If we consider only tests based on heterogeneous panel specifications as Im, Pesaran and Shin (2003), Maddala and Wu (1999) or Choi (2001), the conclusions are not obvious since the non stationarity is strongly rejected for 5 macroeconomic variables generally considered as non stationary. On the contrary, the results based on the second generation tests, which relax this cross-sectional independence assumption, are more in favor of the unit root hypothesis. However this conclusion must be moderated since the results strongly depend on the specification of the model and the method used to eliminate the cross-sectional correlations. •

Trends and random walks in macroeconomic time series: A reappraisal

In this paper we re-analyze the nature of the trend (deterministic or stochastic) in the Nelson-Plosser macroeconomic data set from an alternative method relative to the previous studies. We underline the e ects of large, but infrequent shocks due to major economic or nancial events on U.S. macroeconomic time series, such as the Great Depression, World War II and recessions, using outlier metho...

Analysis of the simultaneous effects of renewable energy consumption and GDP, using Dynamic Panel Data

In the recent years, renewable energy sources are an important component of world energy consumption. GDP is one of the main measures of a country’s economic activity. Most of the studies examine the impact of renewable energy consumption on GDP with single equation model and the others use dynamic panel data. Since the Granger causality analysis’s findings of this paper establish bidirectional...

First, we use a wider international data set of 91 countries over the period 1980-1999 and thus not only the OECD data that have thus far been utilized. Second, we also allow for time series aspect by using panel data estimations. We have two new findings. First, the results from OECD co...

Comparing efficiency of health systems across industrialized countries: a panel analysis

BACKGROUND Rankings from the World Health Organization (WHO) place the US health care system as one of the least efficient among Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries. Researchers have questioned this, noting simplistic or inappropriate methodologies, poor measurement choice, and poor control variables. Our objective is to re-visit this question by using newer m...
